Wild Life
Eritrea was once home to a large range of animals, including buffaloes, cheetahs, vervet monkeys, elephants, giraffes, hippos, Nubian ibexes, leopards, lions and waterbucks. With the loss of the forests and the decades of war, many of these animals have disappeared. However, there has been resurgence in the wild life population since independence and with the help of strict prohibitions on hunting.
The abundance of wildlife reserves and woodlands has enhanced the popularity of ecotourism in Eritrea. With plenty of wildlife reserves and woodlands in the country, Eritrea is home to diverse species of flora and fauna. Around 96 species of mammals and reptiles are found in Eritrea. Such species include monkeys, antelope, jackals, leopards, cobras, pythons, crocodiles, hyenas, foxes, ostriches, wild ass, zebras, gazelles and much more.
