Bird Life

Eritrea hosts an abundance of birdlife as a result of its diverse range of habitats. A total of 537 species have been identified.

The mostly uninhabited Dahlak Islands attract many nesting sea birds—including gulls, ibis and flamingos—because of the rich feeding grounds that surround them. On the islands, 109 species of birds have been recorded.

The tropical forests located in the Semenawi Bahri area (north-east of Asmara) are home to many tropical birds including sunbirds, crimson toraco, francolins, trogon, catbirds and hornbills, among others.

Eritrea also lies within a popular migration flight path—hundreds of species of birds migrate through Eritrea in the autumn and spring.
